What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is the compression of the median nerve at
the wrist. The median nerve, which extends from your forearm to your
hand, controls sensations to the thumb and fingers, as well as impulses
to some small muscles in your hand to assist movement. The median
nerve lies under the transverse carpal ligament. The carpal tunnel is a
narrow passageway of these ligaments and bones at the base of the
hand designed to protect the median nerve and the nine flexor tendons
that bend your fingers.
The flexor tendons enable movement of the hand, such as holding a
glass. These tendons are covered by a lubricating layer called
tenosynovium which allows the tendons to glide easily against each
other whenever we use our hands. Irritation or inflammation of these
tendons results in swelling or thickening of this covering. When this
passageway is narrowed by such injury or inflammation it causes the
median nerve to be compressed because the bones and ligaments that
make up the narrow tunnel are unable to expand. This increased
pressure in the carpal tunnel squeezes the median nerve against the
transverse carpal ligament.
When this increased pressure prevents normal function the result may
be pain, weakness, or numbness in the hand and wrist, radiating up
the arm to the shoulder, especially after repetitive work. This pain
usually occurs on the palm side of the forearm.
What are the Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Symptoms include burning, tingling, or itching numbness in the palm of
the hand and fingers, especially the thumb and the index and middle
fingers. Sufferers may wake up feeling the need to stretch out their
hand and wrist. As symptoms worsen, hands might suffer tingling
sensations during the day. Hand weakness and decreased grip
strength may make it difficult to form a fist, grasp small objects, or
perform other manual tasks. In chronic conditions, the muscles at the
base of the thumb may begin to waste away. Some sufferers may be
unable to judge between hot and cold by touch.
What are the Causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is often the result of a combination of factors
that increase pressure on the median nerve and tendons in the carpal
tunnel. Contributing factors include trauma or injury to the wrist which
causes swelling, such as sprain or fracture, over-activity of the pituitary
gland, diabetes, hypothyroidism, rheumatoid arthritis, physical
problems in the wrist joint, work stress, repeated use of vibrating hand
tools, fluid retention during pregnancy or menopause, or the
development of a cyst or tumor in the canal.
Who is at Risk of Developing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Women are three times more likely than men to develop carpal tunnel
syndrome, which may be due to the carpal tunnel being smaller in
women than in men. In women, the incidence peaks after menopause.
The dominant hand is usually affected first and produces the most
severe pain. Inherited physical characteristics, such as the size and
shape of your wrist, may place you at more at risk. Those who suffer
diabetes or other metabolic disorders may be at higher risk. Certain
tasks that require awkward, repetitive or stressed motions of your
hands and wrists may result in Carpal Tunnel pain. Scientific evidence
has not linked computer use as a cause.

When To Seek Medical Advice
Whenever persistent pain and symptoms interfere with your normal,
everyday activities, consult your doctor.
Continuing research world-wide, together with new developments in
areas such as neuro-infammatory processes conducted by the
Canadian Government in their medical research laboratory allow us to
better understand how we can provide safe, effective pain relief
choices for sufferers of carpal tunnel syndrome and similar medical
complaints. Wearing safe, soothing thermal gloves can even help delay
the need for carpal tunnel surgery.
