What is RSI?
Repetitive Strain Injury is a term used to describe localised injuries such
as trigger finger, tennis elbow and carpal tunnel, as well as more diffuse
pain syndromes (those that occur in other parts of the body) which may be
diagnosed as chronic pain syndrome.
What Are The Symptoms of a Repetitive Strain Injury?
~ Burning, aching or shooting pain that can be restricted to fingertips, or
may occur in a larger area, such as your forearm.
~ tremors, clumsiness and numbness
~ fatigue and lack of strength
~ weakness in the hands or forearms which can make it difficult to perform
even simple tasks such as lifting or holding objects
~ difficulty with normal everyday activities such as chopping vegetables or
turning on a tap
~ painfully cold hands, particularly the fingertips.
What Are The Early Signs of RSI?
Early signs of an overuse injury may include soreness, tingling or
discomfort in the shoulders, arms, wrists, fingers or neck. These symptoms
can occur during or shortly afterwards the stressful activity. Symptoms may
disappear once you stop the stressful activity or it may take hours or
sometimes days for the pain to subside.
Over time and extended use a minor condition may turn into a crippling
injury with more severe and long term effects.
What Are The Causes Of RSI?
The cause of Repetitive Strain Injury may include:
~ using your hands and arms repeatedly for long periods
~ working with poorly designed equipment
~ working at a fast pace for extended period
~ lack of adequate rest sessions
~ using the same muscles in the same way for long periods
~ poor work technique & lack of stretching exercises
~ over-long work hours
~ lack of variety and type of tasks performed
~ working in unsuitable or cold conditions
Medical research shows the underlying cause common to all RSI
conditions is injury to muscles and tendons, including the nerves that run
through them, due to repeated trauma. Use of these muscles may cause
tiny tears so that the area becomes inflamed as your body works to repair
the damage. Without adequate rest, thickened scar tissue forms over the
torn muscle, causing pain, inflammation and eventually nerve and tendon
