What is Sever's Disease?
Sever's disease, also known as calcaneal apophysitis, is the most common
cause of heel pain in young, growing athletes. It is due to overuse and
repetitive strain or trauma of growth plates of the big heel bone in the heel of
the foot. It can occur in children between the ages of 7 to 16, with the majority
of patients presenting between 10 and 12 years of age. Girls are most
commonly affected between the ages of 8 to 10 and boys between the ages of
10 to 12.

Sever's disease results from stress placed on the growth plate of the heel
bone.  Excessive amounts of running or jumping with the heel in a “negative
position” which is common in sports like soccer, causes inflammation to the
growth plate of the heel bone, which causes pain. The muscles, tendons and
ligaments are not growing as fast as the bone growth plate is fusing, which
leads to the growth plate becoming inflamed. Far infrared therapy socks offer
effective, non-prescription symptom relief from severs disease.

What Causes Sever's Disease?
Sever’s disease is directly related to overuse of the bone and tendons in the
heel. This can come from playing sports or anything that involves lots of heel
movements. It can be associated with starting a new sport, or the start of a
new season. Too much weight bearing down on the heel can also cause it as
can excessive traction since the bones and tendons are still developing. It
occurs more commonly in children who pronate (feet turn inward during
walking stride), and involves both heels in more than half of sufferers.

Sever’s disease is self-recovering, meaning that it will go away on its own
when it is used less or when the bone has finished growing. Generally, the
condition does not create any long-term disability and expected to subside in 2
to 8 weeks. Sever's Disease usually subsides by the age of 17.

Tips To Help Prevent Sever’s Disease
One easily preventable cause of Sever’s disease is to avoid worn shoes where
the heel sits low, forming a negative heel and thus placing the foot in a
position where the heel is lower than the toes leading to local inflammation.
Use orthotics to position the foot and ankle at a better mechanical advantage.
